Bupleurum odontites
Narrowleaf Thorow Wax is a drought-tolerant perennial with slender leaves and bright yellow flowers.
Also known as: Narrowleaf Thorow Wax
Bupleurum odontites, commonly known as Narrowleaf Thorow Wax, is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean region, particularly found in southern Europe and parts of North Africa. This species typically grows to a height of 30 to 60 centimeters, exhibiting an upright, bushy form with slender, linear leaves that can reach up to 10 centimeters in length. The leaves are a distinctive bright green, providing a striking contrast to the yellow flowers that bloom in umbels during the summer months. The fruit is a small, flattened capsule containing seeds that are dispersed by wind and water, contributing to its ecological role in stabilizing soil and providing habitat for various pollinators and insects.
In addition to its ornamental value, Bupleurum odontites has been used in traditional medicine for its potential anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The plant has adapted to thrive in rocky, well-drained soils, often found in dry, sunny locations. Its drought tolerance makes it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and low-water gardens. The narrow leaves help reduce water loss, allowing the plant to survive in arid conditions, while its bright flowers attract a variety of pollinators, enhancing biodiversity in its native habitats.
