Callisia fragrans
Basketplant is a trailing perennial known for its attractive variegated leaves and ease of care.
Also known as: Basketplant
Callisia fragrans, commonly known as Basketplant, is native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, particularly in areas such as Mexico and the Caribbean. This perennial herbaceous plant typically exhibits a trailing or cascading growth habit, reaching heights of up to 12 inches (30 cm) while spreading outwards as it grows. The leaves are fleshy, lanceolate, and can be variegated with shades of green and cream, adding to its ornamental appeal. The plant produces small, white to pale lavender flowers that bloom in clusters, followed by tiny, round fruits containing seeds that can be dispersed by water or animals, aiding in its propagation in suitable habitats.
Ecologically, Callisia fragrans plays a role in providing ground cover and stabilizing soil in its native habitats. It is often found in shaded areas under the canopy of larger plants, where it thrives in moist, well-drained soils. The plant is also valued in horticulture for its ornamental qualities and is often used in hanging baskets or as a houseplant due to its attractive foliage and ease of care. Interestingly, Basketplant has adapted to its environment by developing a tolerance for lower light conditions, making it suitable for indoor cultivation. Its ability to thrive in diverse conditions has made it a popular choice among plant enthusiasts.
Keep soil slightly moist. Prune as needed.
