Also known as: Earleaf False Foxglove
Agalinis auriculata, commonly known as Earleaf False Foxglove, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southeastern United States, particularly found in wetland areas, including marshes, swamps, and along the edges of streams. This species typically grows to a height of 30 to 90 centimeters (approximately 12 to 35 inches) and exhibits an upright, branching growth habit. The stems are often slender and may be somewhat hairy, contributing to the plant’s overall texture.
The leaves of Agalinis auriculata are distinctive, being lanceolate to ovate in shape, with a characteristic ear-like shape at the base, which gives rise to its common name. The foliage is arranged oppositely along the stem and can be up to 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) long. The flowering period occurs from late summer to early fall, during which the plant produces attractive, tubular flowers that are typically pink to lavender in color, adorned with darker purple markings. These flowers are borne in racemes at the tops of the stems and are pollinated primarily by bees and other insects. The fruit is a capsule that contains several small seeds, which are dispersed upon maturity.
Agalinis auriculata plays a significant ecological role in its native habitats, providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators. It is also an important component of wetland ecosystems, contributing to plant diversity and serving as a food source for herbivores. While not widely utilized in horticulture, it can be appreciated for its ornamental qualities in native plant gardens. The species is adapted to its wetland environment, often exhibiting a tolerance for saturated soils and fluctuating water levels, which allows it to thrive in conditions that may be inhospitable to many other plant species.
