Roundstem False Foxglove

Agalinis gattingeri, commonly known as Roundstem False Foxglove, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the eastern United States, primarily found in wetland habitats such as marshes, swamps, and along the edges of streams. Its distribution includes states such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, where it thrives in moist, acidic soils. This species typically reaches a height of 30 to 90 centimeters (12 to 35 inches) and exhibits an upright, clumping growth habit with a somewhat branched form.

The leaves of Agalinis gattingeri are lanceolate to ovate, measuring 5 to 15 centimeters (2 to 6 inches) in length, and are arranged oppositely along the stem. The plant produces distinctive flowers that are tubular and resemble those of the true foxglove (Digitalis spp.), hence the common name. The flowers are usually pale purple to pink, with darker purple markings, and are borne in racemes at the top of the stems, attracting various pollinators, particularly bees. The fruit is a capsule that contains several small seeds, which are dispersed by wind or water, aiding in the plant’s propagation in its preferred wetland environments.
