Mougeot’s Amphidium Moss

Amphidium mougeotii, commonly known as Mougeot’s Amphidium Moss, is a species of moss belonging to the family Amphidiaceae. This moss is primarily found in temperate regions of Europe and Asia, with a distribution that includes parts of the British Isles, France, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries. It typically inhabits moist, shaded environments, often growing on decaying wood, rocks, and in forest understories, where it contributes to the biodiversity of these ecosystems.

Mougeot’s Amphidium Moss exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 2 to 5 centimeters. The plants form dense, green cushions or tufts, which can appear somewhat irregular in shape due to their branching patterns. The leaves of this species are narrow and elongated, measuring approximately 1 to 2 millimeters in width and 5 to 10 millimeters in length, with a distinctive serrated edge that aids in water retention. These sporophytes consist of a slender seta (stalk) that can reach up to 15 centimeters in height, topped with a capsule that contains spores for reproduction.
