Thompson’s Rockcress

Arabis microphylla var. thompsonii, commonly known as Thompson’s Rockcress, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of Idaho and Montana. This variety typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. Its growth habit is characterized by a compact form, reaching heights of approximately 10 to 30 centimeters. The plant often forms dense mats or cushions, which provide stability in its often harsh alpine environment.

The leaves of Thompson’s Rockcress are small, typically measuring 1 to 3 centimeters in length, and are arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. They are lanceolate to ovate in shape, with a glabrous to slightly hairy texture, and exhibit a bluish-green coloration. The flowering period occurs primarily in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces delicate, four-petaled white to pale pink flowers that are approximately 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter. These flowers are borne on slender, upright racemes and are known to attract various pollinators, including bees. Following flowering, the plant produces elongated siliques, which are the fruit that contain small seeds, facilitating its reproduction and dispersal in its native habitat.
