Eastwood’s Milkvetch

Astragalus eastwoodiae, commonly known as Eastwood’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of California and Nevada. It typically grows in well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. The growth habit of Eastwood’s Milkvetch is characterized by a clumping form, with individual plants reaching a height of 30 to 60 centimeters. The stems are often erect and may exhibit a slight branching pattern, contributing to a bushy appearance.

The leaves of Astragalus eastwoodiae are pinnately compound, typically consisting of 11 to 19 leaflets that are linear to lanceolate in shape, measuring approximately 2 to 5 centimeters in length. The leaflets are often covered with fine hairs, giving them a slightly silvery appearance. The flowers are a notable feature, forming dense racemes that can contain numerous individual blossoms. Each flower is generally purple to lavender, with a distinctive banner petal that is larger than the other petals, measuring around 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in length. The fruit is a flattened legume pod that can contain several seeds, which are adapted for dispersal by wind or water.

Ecologically, Eastwood’s Milkvetch plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for various herbivores. Its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil through symbiotic relationships with rhizobia bacteria enhances soil fertility, benefiting surrounding plant communities. While specific human uses of this species are limited, some Astragalus species are known for their medicinal properties and potential applications in traditional medicine.
