This variety typically grows in dry, rocky soils and can be found in sagebrush and desert scrub habitats. The growth habit of Mat Milkvetch is low and mat-forming, generally reaching heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. Its sprawling form allows it to cover the ground effectively, which can help stabilize soil in its native habitats.
The leaves of Mat Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are typically narrow and linear, contributing to its overall drought-resistant characteristics.
