Also known as: Lens Pod Milkvetch
Astragalus lentiformis, commonly known as Lens Pod Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. This species is native to the arid regions of the western United States, particularly found in states such as Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. It typically thrives in sandy or gravelly soils, often in open, disturbed areas or alongside roads. The growth habit of Astragalus lentiformis can reach heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters, exhibiting a bushy form with multiple stems arising from a central crown.
The leaves of Lens Pod Milkvetch are pinnately compound, usually consisting of 7 to 15 leaflets that are linear to oblong in shape, measuring about 1 to 3 centimeters in length. The plant produces distinctive flowers that are typically purple to lavender in color, arranged in dense racemes. Blooming occurs primarily in the spring to early summer, attracting various pollinators such as bees. The fruit of this species is a distinctive, lens-shaped pod, which can measure up to 2.5 centimeters long, containing several seeds. These pods are often hairy and can be somewhat flattened, contributing to the plant’s common name.
Ecologically, Astragalus lentiformis plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for herbivores. The plant is also known for its ability to fix nitrogen, which enhances soil fertility. In terms of human uses, while not widely cultivated, it may have applications in traditional medicine or as a forage crop in specific regions. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to tolerate drought conditions, which is facilitated by a deep root system that allows it to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making it well-suited for survival in its native arid environments.
