Northern Freckled Milkvetch

Astragalus lentiginosus var. albifolius, commonly known as Northern Freckled Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This variety is native to the western United States, particularly found in regions such as Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. It typically thrives in dry, open habitats, including sagebrush steppe and grasslands, where it can often be found at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. The growth habit of this plant is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The stems are generally hairy and may branch out, contributing to a bushy appearance.

The leaves of Northern Freckled Milkvetch are compound, typically pinnate, and consist of several oval to linear leaflets that can exhibit a distinctive freckled appearance, giving rise to its common name. The flowers are small and typically occur in dense clusters, presenting a range of colors from white to pale purple, with a unique pattern that may attract pollinators such as bees. Flowering usually occurs from late spring to early summer, followed by the development of elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds. These pods are often hairy and can be slightly curved, aiding in seed dispersal.
