Higgins’ Milkvetch

Astragalus lentiginosus var. higginsii, commonly known as Higgins’ Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, particularly found in the states of California, Nevada, and Utah. This variety typically inhabits arid and semi-arid environments, often growing in sandy or rocky soils at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 3,500 meters. The growth habit of Higgins’ Milkvetch is characterized by a compact form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The stems are erect and may branch, contributing to a bushy appearance.

The leaves of Higgins’ Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of several small leaflets that are lanceolate to ovate in shape. These leaves are typically a glaucous green, which may help reduce water loss in its native arid habitats. The flowers are notable for their distinct morphology, appearing in racemes or clusters, with individual flowers exhibiting a purple to violet hue. Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer, attracting various pollinators, including bees. The fruit is a legume, which is elongated and flattened, containing several seeds that are adapted for dispersal by wind or water.
