Also known as: Sandhills Milkvetch
Astragalus michauxii, commonly known as Sandhills Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southeastern United States, particularly found in the sandy soils of the Sandhills region of North Carolina and South Carolina. This species typically grows to a height of 30 to 60 centimeters (about 12 to 24 inches) and exhibits a bushy growth habit, forming clumps that can spread through rhizomes. The stems are generally erect and may be somewhat hairy, contributing to the plant’s overall texture.
The leaves of Astragalus michauxii are pinnately compound, consisting of 10 to 15 leaflets that are narrow and linear, giving them a delicate appearance. The flowers are a notable feature, blooming in clusters and displaying a characteristic purple to lavender hue, with a typical flowering period occurring from late spring to early summer. The fruit is a legume, which is flat and elongated, containing several seeds that are dispersed upon maturation. This species plays an important ecological role in its native habitat, serving as a food source for various pollinators and contributing to soil stabilization in sandy environments.
Adaptations of Sandhills Milkvetch include its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor, well-drained sandy soils, which are often subject to drought conditions. The plant is also nitrogen-fixing, thanks to its symbiotic relationship with rhizobia bacteria, which allows it to enrich the soil and support surrounding plant communities. While primarily of ecological significance, Sandhills Milkvetch has also been studied for its potential uses in restoration ecology, particularly in efforts to rehabilitate disturbed sandy habitats.
