Astragalus nelsonianus, commonly known as Nelson's Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae.
Also known as: Nelson's Milkvetch
Astragalus nelsonianus, commonly known as Nelson’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the western United States, particularly found in regions such as Nevada and California. It typically inhabits arid and semi-arid environments, often thriving in sandy or gravelly soils at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 2,500 meters. The growth habit of Nelson’s Milkvetch is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant often exhibits a bushy appearance due to its branching stems.
The leaves of Astragalus nelsonianus are pinnately compound, consisting of several leaflets that are narrow and elongated, contributing to its overall delicate appearance. The flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer, are arranged in dense racemes and are typically purple to lavender in color, attracting various pollinators. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds. These pods are often hairy and can be slightly curved, which is a characteristic feature of many species within the Astragalus genus.
Ecologically, Nelson’s Milkvetch plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and improving soil fertility through nitrogen fixation, a process facilitated by its symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium bacteria. This ability to enrich the soil makes it a valuable species in restoration projects and for use in sustainable agriculture. Additionally, the plant serves as a food source for various herbivores, including insects and larger mammals. Adaptations such as drought tolerance and the ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils enhance its survival in challenging environments, making it an important component of its ecosystem.
