Also known as: Malibu Baccharis
Baccharis malibuensis, commonly known as Malibu Baccharis, is a perennial shrub native to the coastal regions of southern California, particularly in the Santa Monica Mountains and surrounding areas. This species typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) and exhibits a bushy, upright form. Its growth habit allows it to thrive in a variety of habitats, including disturbed areas, coastal sage scrub, and chaparral ecosystems, where it plays a role in stabilizing soil and providing habitat for various wildlife.
The leaves of Baccharis malibuensis are lanceolate to elliptical in shape, measuring approximately 2 to 8 centimeters long, and are characterized by a glossy green upper surface and a lighter, pubescent underside. The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are typically white to cream in color, blooming from late summer to fall. These flowers are arranged in clusters and are wind-pollinated, attracting various pollinators. Following flowering, the plant develops small, tufted achenes that are dispersed by the wind, aiding in its propagation across its native range.
Ecologically, Malibu Baccharis serves as an important component of its native habitat, providing food and shelter for numerous insects and birds. It is also utilized in restoration projects aimed at rehabilitating coastal ecosystems. One notable adaptation of Baccharis malibuensis is its ability to tolerate drought conditions, which is facilitated by its deep root system and the waxy cuticle on its leaves that reduces water loss. This resilience to arid conditions makes it a valuable species for conservation efforts in increasingly dry environments.
