Donnell’s Hornwort

Anthoceros donnelli, commonly known as Donnell’s Hornwort, is a species of hornwort belonging to the family Anthocerotaceae. This plant is native to the temperate regions of eastern North America, particularly found in moist habitats such as shaded woodlands, stream banks, and wetlands. It typically grows in a prostrate to erect form, reaching heights of 5 to 15 centimeters. The growth habit is characterized by a rosette of thalloid structures that can spread horizontally, forming dense mats on the substrate.

The notable characteristics of Anthoceros donnelli include its distinctive thallus, which is green and lobed, resembling a flattened horn. The leaves are simple and can vary in shape, often appearing as elongated lobes. This species produces sporophytes that emerge from the thallus, which are elongated and horn-like, giving rise to its common name. The sporophytes are typically green and can reach lengths of up to 20 centimeters, containing sporangia that release spores for reproduction. Unlike flowering plants, hornworts do not produce flowers or seeds; instead, they reproduce via spores.

Ecologically, Donnell’s Hornwort plays a significant role in its habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing a microhabitat for various microorganisms and small invertebrates. It is also involved in nutrient cycling within its ecosystem. Interestingly, hornworts, including Anthoceros donnelli, exhibit a unique adaptation in their symbiotic relationship with cyanobacteria, which reside in specialized cavities within the thallus.
