Calliergonella cuspidata
Calliergonella Moss is a low-growing, moisture-loving moss found in wetlands and shaded forest areas.
Also known as: Calliergonella Moss
Calliergonella cuspidata, commonly known as Calliergonella Moss, is a perennial moss species native to various regions across North America and parts of Europe. This moss typically grows in moist, shaded environments, often found in wetlands, along stream banks, and in forested areas. It exhibits a low, cushion-like growth habit, reaching heights of about 2 to 5 centimeters, forming dense mats that can cover large areas. The leaves are lanceolate to ovate, measuring 2 to 3 millimeters in length, and are arranged spirally around the stem, giving the moss a lush, green appearance. The sporophytes, which are the reproductive structures, are usually elongated and can be seen rising above the leafy stems, producing capsules that release spores for reproduction.
Ecologically, Calliergonella Moss plays a vital role in its habitat by helping to retain moisture in the soil and providing a substrate for various microorganisms and invertebrates. It contributes to the overall biodiversity of its environment and serves as a habitat for small organisms. While not widely utilized by humans, it can be used in decorative applications and in ecological restoration projects to stabilize soil and improve water retention. This moss has adaptations that allow it to thrive in its moist habitats, including the ability to tolerate temporary desiccation and a high surface area that aids in water absorption.
