This variety of red fir exhibits a pyramidal growth habit, reaching heights of 30 to 60 meters (approximately 100 to 200 feet) and can have a trunk diameter of up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet). The tree’s form is characterized by a straight trunk and horizontal branches that create a dense, conical crown.
The leaves of California red fir are needle-like, measuring 2 to 5 centimeters in length, and are arranged spirally around the stem, with a flat, linear shape that is dark green on the upper surface and paler beneath due to the presence of stomatal lines. The tree produces cylindrical cones that are 7 to 12 centimeters long, maturing from green to a reddish-brown color, and typically release seeds in late summer or early fall. California red fir plays a significant ecological role in its native habitat, providing habitat and food for various wildlife species, including birds and small mammals. Additionally, it is valued for its wood, which is used in construction and for making furniture due to its strength and workability.
