European Water Plantain

Alisma plantago-aquatica, commonly known as European Water Plantain, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to a wide range of regions across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It typically thrives in shallow freshwater habitats such as ponds, marshes, and the edges of slow-moving rivers. The plant exhibits a growth habit characterized by erect stems that can reach heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. The form is generally clump-forming, with a rosette of basal leaves that are broad, lanceolate, and can measure up to 30 centimeters in length. These leaves are often submerged or floating, with a glossy green appearance, and they contribute to the plant’s ability to photosynthesize efficiently in aquatic environments.

The flowering period of Alisma plantago-aquatica occurs from late spring to early summer, during which it produces distinctive inflorescences. The flowers are small, typically 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter, and are borne on branched racemes that can rise above the foliage. Each flower features three white to pale pink petals and numerous stamens, giving the plant a striking appearance when in bloom. Following pollination, the plant produces achenes, which are small, dry fruits that contain a single seed. These fruits are dispersed by water, aiding in the plant’s propagation across suitable habitats.
