Also known as: Calamus

Acorus calamus, commonly known as calamus or sweet flag, is a perennial wetland plant native to a variety of regions, including parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. It typically thrives in marshy areas, along the edges of ponds, and in shallow water, often forming dense stands. The plant can reach heights of 60 to 120 centimeters (approximately 2 to 4 feet) and features a clumping growth habit with upright, sword-shaped leaves that can be up to 2.5 centimeters wide. The leaves are linear, lanceolate, and have a glossy green appearance, contributing to the plant’s distinctive look.

The flowering period of Acorus calamus occurs in late spring to early summer, producing small, inconspicuous flowers that are arranged in a cylindrical spike known as a spadix. These flowers are typically yellow-green and are surrounded by a leaf-like bract. The fruit is a small, berry-like structure that contains seeds, which are dispersed by water or animals. Acorus calamus plays a significant ecological role in its habitat, providing shelter and food for various aquatic organisms. Additionally, it is known for its medicinal properties and has been used in traditional medicine for digestive issues, respiratory ailments, and as a flavoring agent in some culinary applications.

One notable adaptation of Acorus calamus is its ability to thrive in anaerobic conditions, which are common in its wetland habitats. The plant has specialized aerenchyma tissue, allowing it to transport oxygen from the leaves to the submerged parts of the plant, thus facilitating survival in waterlogged soils. Furthermore, the rhizomes of calamus are thick and fleshy, enabling the plant to store energy and withstand periods of flooding. These adaptations not only enhance its survival but also contribute to the overall health of wetland ecosystems by stabilizing soil and improving water quality.
