Nevada Needlegrass

Achnatherum nevadense, commonly known as Nevada Needlegrass, is a perennial grass species native to the western United States, primarily found in the mountainous regions of Nevada, California, and surrounding areas. This grass typically grows in well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters, often inhabiting open grasslands, sagebrush steppe, and rocky slopes. The growth habit of Nevada Needlegrass is characterized by its tufted form, reaching heights of 30 to 90 centimeters. The plant has a distinctive appearance, with narrow, elongated leaves that can be up to 30 centimeters long and 1 to 3 millimeters wide, exhibiting a fine texture and a green to bluish-green coloration.

The flowering period of Achnatherum nevadense occurs from late spring to early summer, producing inflorescences that are arranged in loose, elongated panicles. The flowers are typically purplish or greenish in color and are adapted for wind pollination. The fruit, a caryopsis, is elongated and slender, featuring a long awn that can measure up to 10 centimeters, aiding in seed dispersal by wind.
