Achnatherum occidentale ssp.
Also known as: Western Needlegrass
Achnatherum occidentale ssp. occidentale, commonly known as Western Needlegrass, is a perennial grass native to the western regions of North America, primarily found in the Great Basin and the Sierra Nevada foothills. Its distribution extends from eastern Washington and Oregon to parts of California, Nevada, and Utah. This subspecies typically thrives in well-drained soils and is often found in grasslands, open forests, and disturbed areas where it can receive full sun exposure.
Western Needlegrass exhibits a growth habit characterized by upright, slender stems that can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters. The plant has a clumping form, producing dense tufts of narrow, linear leaves that are typically 1 to 4 millimeters wide and can grow up to 30 centimeters long. The leaves are green to bluish-green and have a fine texture, contributing to the plant’s overall delicate appearance. Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer, with inflorescences forming elongated, spike-like clusters that can be up to 15 centimeters long. The flowers are wind-pollinated and produce distinctive, elongated, awned seeds that can be dispersed by wind and animals, aiding in the plant’s propagation.
Ecologically, Western Needlegrass plays a significant role in its native habitats by providing forage for various herbivores and contributing to soil stability through its extensive root system. It is often used in restoration projects to improve grassland ecosystems and prevent soil erosion. The species has adapted to survive in arid conditions, exhibiting drought tolerance through its deep root system that allows it to access moisture from deeper soil layers. Additionally, its fine leaves reduce water loss through transpiration, making it well-suited for the environments in which it grows.
Sow seeds in spring. Prefers dry conditions.
