Pine Needlegrass

Achnatherum pinetorum, commonly known as Pine Needlegrass, is a perennial grass species native to the western United States, particularly found in the montane and subalpine regions of the Rocky Mountains. Its distribution extends from southern Montana to northern New Mexico, thriving in dry, rocky soils and often associated with pine forests. This species typically exhibits a clump-forming growth habit, reaching heights of 30 to 90 centimeters (12 to 36 inches). The plant has a fine, delicate appearance due to its slender, needle-like leaves, which can be up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) long and are characterized by a rolled or folded form that gives them a distinctive texture.

The inflorescence of Achnatherum pinetorum is a loose, open panicle that can reach lengths of 15 to 30 centimeters (6 to 12 inches). The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, with flowers that are typically pale green to purple, maturing into a tan or golden hue as they develop. The seeds are small, elongated, and equipped with a tuft of fine hairs, which aids in wind dispersal.
