Also known as: Richardson's Needlegrass

Achnatherum richardsonii, commonly known as Richardson’s Needlegrass, is a perennial grass species native to the North American prairies, primarily found in the western United States and Canada. Its range extends from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Montana and Wyoming to the Great Plains and further into regions of Canada, including Alberta and Saskatchewan. This species typically grows in well-drained soils, often in grasslands, open forests, and disturbed areas, where it can thrive in a variety of ecological conditions.

Richardson’s Needlegrass exhibits a tufted growth habit, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 90 centimeters (12 to 35 inches). The plant has a slender, erect form with long, narrow leaves that are typically 2 to 5 millimeters wide and can grow up to 30 centimeters long. The leaves are green to bluish-green in color, with a fine texture and a distinctive rolled appearance. Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer, producing inflorescences in the form of loose panicles that can be up to 15 centimeters long. The flowers are primarily wind-pollinated and develop into elongated, slender seeds that are dispersed by wind and animals, facilitating their spread across the landscape.

Ecologically, Achnatherum richardsonii plays a significant role in its native habitats by providing forage for grazing animals and contributing to soil stabilization with its extensive root system. It is also a component of the grassland ecosystem, supporting a variety of wildlife. The species has adaptations that allow it to endure drought conditions, including a deep root system that accesses moisture from deeper soil layers. Additionally, its growth form and leaf structure help minimize water loss, making it well-suited for survival in the often arid environments of the regions it inhabits. While primarily valued for its ecological contributions, Richardson’s Needlegrass is also utilized in restoration projects and as a forage species in sustainable grazing systems.
