Achnatherum speciosum, commonly known as Desert Needlegrass, is a perennial grass species native to the arid regions of the western United States, particularly found in the Great Basin and surrounding areas. This species typically grows in well-drained soils and is adapted to dry, open habitats such as sagebrush steppe and grasslands. Desert Needlegrass exhibits a tufted growth habit, reaching heights of 30 to 90 centimeters (approximately 12 to 35 inches). The plant has a narrow, upright form with long, slender leaves that can measure up to 30 centimeters (about 12 inches) in length, contributing to its characteristic needle-like appearance.
The leaves of Achnatherum speciosum are narrow and linear, with a fine texture that aids in reducing water loss, an important adaptation for survival in its native arid environments. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces distinctive inflorescences. The flowers are arranged in loose, elongated panicles that can reach lengths of up to 20 centimeters (around 8 inches), with each flower possessing long awns that help in seed dispersal. The fruit is a caryopsis, which is a type of dry, one-seeded fruit that is adapted for wind dispersal, allowing the seeds to spread across the landscape.
Ecologically, Desert Needlegrass plays a significant role in its native habitat by providing forage for various herbivores and contributing to soil stabilization. It is also a valuable species for restoration projects in degraded areas due to its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils. The plant’s adaptations, including its fine leaves and seed dispersal mechanisms, enhance its survival in challenging environments, making it a resilient component of the grassland ecosystem.
Sow seeds in spring or fall. Prefers dry conditions and full sun exposure.
