Also known as: Wallowa Needlegrass
Achnatherum wallowaensis, commonly known as Wallowa Needlegrass, is a perennial grass species native to the mountainous regions of northeastern Oregon, particularly the Wallowa Mountains. This species typically grows in well-drained, sandy to loamy soils at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,500 meters. Wallowa Needlegrass exhibits a clumping growth habit, reaching heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. The plant forms dense tufts that contribute to its overall structural integrity in its native habitat.
The leaves of Achnatherum wallowaensis are narrow, linear, and can grow up to 30 centimeters in length, displaying a distinctive blue-green color that aids in its identification. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces inflorescences in the form of slender, elongated panicles that can reach up to 20 centimeters in length. The flowers are typically wind-pollinated and produce elongated, awned seeds that facilitate dispersal by wind. These seeds are adapted to germinate in the cool, moist conditions typical of their native range, allowing the species to thrive in its specific ecological niche.
Wallowa Needlegrass plays a significant role in its ecosystem by providing forage for wildlife and livestock, as well as stabilizing soil in its mountainous habitat. Its adaptations to high elevations include a tolerance for drought and cold temperatures, which are common in its native range. The grass’s deep root system allows it to access moisture from deeper soil layers, further enhancing its resilience in challenging environments. Additionally, its growth form and dense clumping habit help prevent soil erosion, making it an important species for maintaining the health of its native ecosystems.
