Pacific Bentgrass

Agrostis avenacea, commonly known as Pacific Bentgrass, is a perennial grass species native to the western regions of North America, particularly found along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska. It typically thrives in moist, well-drained soils, often inhabiting meadows, wetlands, and disturbed areas. This species exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters, forming dense tufts or clumps. The plant has a fine, delicate appearance, with slender stems that can be erect or slightly bent.

The leaves of Agrostis avenacea are narrow and linear, measuring between 2 to 6 millimeters in width. They are typically green to bluish-green in color and can have a smooth or slightly hairy texture. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, producing spikelets that are arranged in loose, open panicles. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, with a range of colors from pale green to purplish hues, which eventually give way to small, elongated seeds. The fruit is a caryopsis, which is a type of dry fruit that does not open at maturity, facilitating wind dispersal.
