Winter Bentgrass

Agrostis hyemalis, commonly known as Winter Bentgrass, is a perennial grass species native to North America, particularly found in the northeastern United States and parts of Canada. This species typically thrives in cool, moist environments, often colonizing disturbed areas, roadsides, and open woodlands. Winter Bentgrass exhibits a growth habit characterized by a tufted or clumping form, reaching heights of 15 to 60 centimeters. The plant has a fine-textured appearance, with slender stems that can be erect or slightly bent.

The leaves of Agrostis hyemalis are narrow, linear, and can be up to 20 centimeters long, with a smooth surface and a distinctive folded appearance when young. The inflorescence is a loose, open panicle that can reach lengths of 10 to 30 centimeters, with flowering occurring from late spring to early summer. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, typically featuring a greenish hue, and they produce achenes as fruit, which are dispersed by wind and water. This species plays an important ecological role by providing ground cover, preventing soil erosion, and serving as a food source for various herbivores.
