Also known as: Annual Silver Hairgrass
Aira elegans, commonly known as Annual Silver Hairgrass, is a species of grass native to the Mediterranean region, particularly found in southern Europe and parts of North Africa. This annual grass typically grows in open, dry habitats such as sandy soils, grasslands, and disturbed areas. It has a tufted growth habit, reaching heights of approximately 15 to 40 centimeters. The plant exhibits a delicate and airy form, characterized by its slender, erect stems that often bend under the weight of its inflorescences.
The leaves of Aira elegans are narrow, linear, and can grow up to 10 centimeters long, with a fine texture that contributes to its overall silvery appearance. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, when the plant produces distinctive inflorescences consisting of loose, elongated panicles. The flowers are small and have a pale green to silvery hue, which can give the entire plant a shimmering effect in sunlight. Following flowering, the grass produces small, elongated caryopses that are dispersed by wind, aiding in its propagation across its native range.
Ecologically, Aira elegans plays a role in stabilizing sandy soils and providing habitat for various insects and small animals. Its adaptability to dry, nutrient-poor conditions allows it to thrive in environments where many other plants struggle. While it is not widely utilized in human applications, its aesthetic appeal makes it a candidate for ornamental use in xeriscaping and naturalistic gardens. The species has adapted to its environment with a quick life cycle, allowing it to germinate, grow, and reproduce within a single growing season, which is a beneficial trait in unpredictable climates.
Sow seeds in spring. Prefers dry, sandy soils.
