Sonoma Shortawn Foxtail

Alopecurus aequalis var. sonomensis, commonly known as Sonoma Shortawn Foxtail, is a perennial grass native to the western United States, particularly found in California’s coastal regions and the Sierra Nevada foothills. This variety thrives in moist, open habitats such as meadows, grasslands, and along stream banks, typically at elevations ranging from sea level to about 1,500 meters. The growth habit of Sonoma Shortawn Foxtail is characterized by its erect, tufted form, reaching heights of 30 to 90 centimeters. The grass exhibits a clumping growth pattern, with dense tufts that can create a distinctive appearance in its native habitat.

The leaves of Alopecurus aequalis var. sonomensis are slender, linear, and can be up to 30 centimeters long, with a smooth texture and a prominent midrib. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces distinctive inflorescences. The flower heads are elongated and cylindrical, typically measuring 5 to 15 centimeters in length, with a characteristic soft, awn-tipped appearance that gives rise to its common name. The spikelets are greenish to purplish in color and mature into a light brown or tan hue, eventually dispersing seeds that are adapted for wind dispersal.
