Meadow Foxtail

Alopecurus pratensis, commonly known as Meadow Foxtail, is a perennial grass species native to Europe and parts of Asia. It thrives in a variety of habitats, particularly in moist meadows, grasslands, and along riverbanks. The species typically grows to a height of 30 to 100 centimeters, exhibiting a tufted growth form that allows it to form dense stands. Its growth habit is characterized by erect, slender stems that can bend under the weight of the inflorescence.

The leaves of Alopecurus pratensis are linear and elongated, reaching lengths of up to 30 centimeters and typically measuring 5 to 10 millimeters in width. They are green, smooth, and often have a slightly glossy appearance. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces distinctive cylindrical flower spikes that can be up to 15 centimeters long. The spikelets are densely packed and have a characteristic foxtail shape, giving rise to the common name. The fruit is a caryopsis, a type of dry fruit that is typically dispersed by wind or water, contributing to the species’ ability to colonize new areas.
