American Beachgrass

Ammophila breviligulata, commonly known as American Beachgrass, is a perennial grass species native to the coastal regions of North America, primarily found along the Atlantic coast from Maine to Virginia, as well as parts of the Great Lakes. This species typically grows in sandy soils, often colonizing dunes and other coastal habitats where it plays a crucial role in stabilizing the substrate. American Beachgrass can reach heights of 60 to 90 centimeters (24 to 35 inches) and exhibits a clumping growth habit, with long, slender stems that can form dense stands.

The leaves of Ammophila breviligulata are narrow and elongated, measuring approximately 30 to 50 centimeters (12 to 20 inches) in length, with a distinctive rolled appearance that helps minimize water loss in its sandy habitat. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, producing spikelets that are borne on elongated inflorescences. The flowers are wind-pollinated and are typically greenish or purplish in color, maturing into small, elongated seeds that are dispersed by wind and water. This grass species is particularly important for coastal ecosystems, as it helps prevent erosion by anchoring sand dunes with its extensive root system, and it provides habitat for various wildlife species.

American Beachgrass has adapted to its harsh coastal environment through several mechanisms. Its deep root system not only stabilizes sand but also allows it to access moisture and nutrients in nutrient-poor soils.
