Shortspike Bluestem

Andropogon brachystachyus, commonly known as Shortspike Bluestem, is a perennial grass species native to the central and eastern United States, particularly thriving in regions such as the Great Plains and parts of the Midwest. This species typically grows in open grasslands, prairies, and savannas, where it contributes to the biodiversity of these ecosystems. The growth habit of Shortspike Bluestem is characterized by a clumping form, reaching heights of approximately 60 to 90 centimeters (24 to 36 inches). The plant exhibits a dense tufted appearance, with erect stems that can be somewhat slender.

The leaves of Andropogon brachystachyus are narrow and linear, typically measuring 3 to 10 millimeters in width, and they have a distinctive bluish-green hue, which is a notable characteristic of the species. The flowering occurs from late summer to early fall, producing inflorescences that are compact and spike-like, hence the common name.
