Andropogon gyrans var.
Also known as: Elliott's Bluestem
Andropogon gyrans var. stenophyllus, commonly known as Elliott’s Bluestem, is a perennial grass native to the southeastern United States, particularly found in regions such as the coastal plains and open woodlands of states like Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. This variety typically exhibits a growth habit characterized by a clumping form, reaching heights of approximately 60 to 120 centimeters (24 to 48 inches). The plant has a distinctive upright posture, with narrow, elongated leaves that can measure up to 1 meter in length and 1.5 centimeters in width, displaying a bluish-green hue that contributes to its common name.
Elliott’s Bluestem produces inflorescences that are arranged in a loose, open panicle, which can extend up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) in length. The flowering period generally occurs in late summer to early fall, during which the flowers are borne on slender stems, giving the plant a feathery appearance. The seeds are small, typically measuring around 2 to 3 millimeters in length, and are dispersed by wind, aiding in the plant’s propagation across its native range. This species plays a significant ecological role by providing habitat and forage for various wildlife, including birds and small mammals. Additionally, it is often used in restoration projects and native landscaping due to its adaptability to a range of soil types and moisture conditions.
Elliott’s Bluestem exhibits several adaptations that enhance its survival in its native habitats. Its deep root system allows it to access moisture and nutrients from deeper soil layers, making it resilient to drought conditions. The narrow leaf structure minimizes water loss through transpiration, which is particularly beneficial in the warmer climates of its range. Furthermore, the plant’s ability to thrive in disturbed areas and its tolerance for varying light conditions contribute to its ecological success and make it a valuable species for promoting biodiversity in grassland ecosystems.
