Also known as: Splitbeard Bluestem

Andropogon ternarius var. ternarius, commonly known as Splitbeard Bluestem, is a perennial grass native to the eastern and central United States. Its range extends from southern New England and New York, across the Midwest, and down to the Gulf Coast, thriving in a variety of habitats including prairies, open woods, and disturbed areas. This variety typically reaches a height of 60 to 120 centimeters (approximately 24 to 48 inches) and exhibits a clumping growth habit, forming dense tufts that contribute to its overall form.

The leaves of Splitbeard Bluestem are narrow, linear, and can grow up to 30 centimeters (about 12 inches) long, with a characteristic bluish-green coloration that turns golden in the fall. The inflorescence is distinctive, featuring a loose, open panicle that can reach up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) in length, with flowering occurring from late summer to early fall. The flowers are small, with a purplish hue, and are borne on long, slender branches that give the appearance of a “split beard,” hence the common name. The fruit is a small caryopsis, which aids in the plant’s reproduction and dispersal.

Ecologically, Splitbeard Bluestem plays a significant role in its native habitats by providing forage for various herbivores and serving as a nesting site for ground-nesting birds. Its deep root system helps prevent soil erosion and contributes to soil health by improving structure and nutrient cycling. Additionally, the species is adapted to survive in a range of soil types and moisture conditions, making it resilient to drought and capable of thriving in less fertile soils. This adaptability, along with its aesthetic appeal, has led to its use in prairie restoration projects and as an ornamental grass in landscaping.
