Also known as: Giant Reed

Arundo donax, commonly known as Giant Reed, is a perennial grass species native to the Mediterranean region, including southern Europe, northern Africa, and parts of Asia. It has been widely introduced to many other regions, particularly in the Americas, where it often thrives in riparian zones, wetlands, and disturbed areas. Giant Reed typically grows to heights of 3 to 6 meters (10 to 20 feet), with some specimens reaching up to 9 meters (30 feet) under optimal conditions. The plant exhibits a clumping growth habit, forming dense stands that can spread aggressively through rhizomes.

The leaves of Arundo donax are long, narrow, and lanceolate, measuring 1 to 5 centimeters in width and up to 1 meter in length. They are green to bluish-green in color and have a distinctive glossy appearance. Flowering occurs in late summer to early fall, producing feathery, plume-like inflorescences that can reach lengths of 30 to 50 centimeters (12 to 20 inches). These inflorescences consist of a dense cluster of spikelets that turn from a silvery hue to a golden-brown as they mature, ultimately producing small, wind-dispersed seeds. The fruit is a caryopsis, which is typical of grasses.

Ecologically, Giant Reed plays a significant role in stabilizing soil and providing habitat for various wildlife species. However, its aggressive growth can lead to it becoming invasive in some regions, outcompeting native vegetation and altering local ecosystems. Human uses of Arundo donax are diverse; it has been employed in traditional crafts, such as basket weaving and making musical instruments, and is also used in erosion control and as a biofuel source due to its high biomass yield. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, including saline and alkaline soils, which contributes to its success in various environments.
