Dwarf Century Plant

Agave desmettiana, commonly known as the Dwarf Century Plant, is a succulent species native to the arid regions of Mexico, particularly found in the states of Puebla and Oaxaca. This perennial plant typically exhibits a compact growth habit, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches) and spreading up to 1 meter (3 feet) in diameter. The rosette form of the plant is characterized by its dense arrangement of leaves that are thick, fleshy, and lanceolate, measuring around 30 to 50 centimeters (12 to 20 inches) in length. The leaves are a striking bluish-green color, often with a waxy coating that aids in water retention, and they feature prominent marginal spines that can deter herbivores.

In terms of reproductive characteristics, Agave desmettiana produces a tall flowering stalk that can reach heights of up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) when it blooms, typically in the late spring to early summer. The inflorescence consists of numerous yellow-green flowers that are attractive to pollinators, particularly hummingbirds and various insects. After flowering, the plant produces a cluster of capsule-like fruits that contain seeds, which can be dispersed by wind or animals.
