Also known as: Schott's Century Plant

Agave schottii var. schottii, commonly known as Schott’s Century Plant, is a succulent species native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, particularly found in the Sonoran Desert. This variety typically grows in areas with well-drained soils and can often be seen in rocky outcrops or sandy substrates. The growth habit of Schott’s Century Plant is characterized by a rosette form, reaching heights of approximately 1 to 1.5 meters (3 to 5 feet) and spreading outwards to about 1 meter (3 feet) in diameter.

The leaves of Agave schottii var. schottii are one of its most notable features, being thick, fleshy, and lanceolate in shape, with a distinctive bluish-green coloration. The leaves can grow up to 1 meter (3 feet) long and are armed with sharp, prominent spines along the margins and a terminal spine at the tip. The flowering occurs infrequently, typically after several years of growth, when a tall flower stalk emerges from the center of the rosette, reaching heights of up to 3 meters (10 feet). The inflorescence consists of numerous yellow to greenish flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. Following flowering, the plant produces a capsule-like fruit that contains seeds, which can be dispersed by wind or animals.

Ecologically, Agave schottii var. schottii plays a significant role in its habitat by providing food and shelter for various desert organisms. The plant is drought-resistant and has adapted to conserve water, making it a crucial component in arid ecosystems. Human uses of this species include its ornamental value in xeriscaping and desert gardens due to its striking appearance and low water requirements. Additionally, like many agaves, it has potential uses in traditional crafts and as a source of fiber. Its adaptations to extreme conditions, including a thick cuticle and specialized stomata, enable it to thrive in environments with limited water availability.
