Agave schottii var.
Also known as: Trelease's Century Plant
Agave schottii var. treleasei, commonly known as Trelease’s Century Plant, is a variety of the species Agave schottii, native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, particularly in areas such as Arizona and Sonora. This plant typically inhabits dry desert environments, often found on rocky slopes and in sandy soils. It exhibits a rosette growth habit, reaching heights of approximately 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet) and forming a compact, symmetrical shape that is characteristic of many agaves.
The leaves of Trelease’s Century Plant are notable for their fleshy, sword-like appearance, measuring up to 1 meter (3 feet) in length. They are usually bluish-green in color, with a distinctive waxy coating that helps reduce water loss, an important adaptation for survival in arid conditions. The leaf margins are lined with sharp, prominent spines, providing a defense against herbivores. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces a tall flower stalk that can reach up to 3 meters (10 feet) in height, bearing clusters of yellow-green flowers that attract various pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds. Following the flowering period, the plant produces a capsule fruit containing seeds, which can be dispersed by wind or animals.
Trelease’s Century Plant plays a significant ecological role in its native habitat, providing food and shelter for various desert wildlife. Additionally, it has been utilized by indigenous peoples for its fibrous leaves, which can be processed into ropes and textiles. The plant’s adaptations, such as its thick leaves and deep root system, allow it to efficiently store water and thrive in extreme conditions, making it a quintessential example of xerophytic flora.
Plant in a sunny location with good drainage. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry out between waterings.
