Angelica dawsonii, commonly known as Dawson's Angelica, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family.
Also known as: Dawson's Angelica
Angelica dawsonii, commonly known as Dawson’s Angelica, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. This species is native to the western regions of North America, particularly found in moist, shaded areas of the Pacific Northwest, including parts of British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. Dawson’s Angelica typically grows to a height of 1 to 2 meters, exhibiting a robust, upright form. The stems are hollow and can be quite thick, contributing to the plant’s overall stature.
The leaves of Angelica dawsonii are large, compound, and deeply lobed, resembling those of other members of the Apiaceae family. They are dark green and can be quite striking, often measuring up to 30 centimeters in length. The flowering period occurs in late summer, during which the plant produces large, umbrella-like clusters of small, white to cream-colored flowers. These inflorescences are attractive to various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering stage, Dawson’s Angelica produces small, ribbed fruits known as schizocarps, which contain seeds that are dispersed by wind and water.
Ecologically, Angelica dawsonii plays a significant role in its native habitat, providing food and shelter for various wildlife species. The plant’s nectar-rich flowers are an important resource for pollinators, while its foliage serves as forage for herbivorous animals. In traditional herbal medicine, Dawson’s Angelica has been utilized for its potential medicinal properties, although it should be approached with caution due to the presence of compounds that can be toxic in large quantities. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to thrive in damp, shaded environments, allowing it to outcompete other plants in such niches, thereby contributing to the biodiversity of its ecosystem.
