King’s Angelica

Angelica kingii, commonly known as King’s Angelica, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. This species is native to the western regions of North America, particularly found in the mountainous areas of the Rocky Mountains, extending from British Columbia in Canada down to New Mexico in the United States. It typically thrives in moist, shaded environments such as stream banks, meadows, and forest understories, often at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters.

King’s Angelica can grow to a height of 1 to 2 meters, exhibiting a robust and upright growth habit. The plant features large, compound leaves that are deeply lobed and can measure up to 30 centimeters in length, with a distinctive dark green coloration. The flowering period occurs in mid-summer, producing large, umbrella-shaped clusters of small, white to pale green flowers, which are arranged in compound umbels. These flowers are not only visually striking but also attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering stage, the plant produces small, ribbed fruits known as schizocarps, which contain seeds that are dispersed by wind and water.

Ecologically, Angelica kingii plays a significant role in its habitat by providing food and shelter for various insects and wildlife. The plant has been utilized by Indigenous peoples for medicinal purposes, including treatments for digestive issues and as a general tonic. Additionally, the roots and leaves of King’s Angelica can be used in culinary applications, often valued for their aromatic qualities. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to thrive in high-altitude environments, where it has developed a tolerance to cooler temperatures and variable moisture levels, allowing it to flourish in conditions that may be challenging for other plants.
