Alps Yarrow

Achillea distans, commonly known as Alps Yarrow, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. This species is native to the mountainous regions of Europe, particularly found in the Alps, the Pyrenees, and parts of the Carpathians. It typically thrives in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. The growth habit of Achillea distans is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of approximately 20 to 60 centimeters. The stems are often branched and may exhibit a slightly hairy texture.

The leaves of Achillea distans are finely dissected, giving them a feathery appearance, and are arranged in a basal rosette as well as along the stem. The leaf blades are typically gray-green to green in color, measuring 2 to 10 centimeters in length. The plant produces small, flat-topped clusters of flowers, known as inflorescences, which are composed of numerous tiny florets. These flowers are typically white to pale yellow and bloom from late spring to early summer. The fruit of the plant is achenes, which are small, dry, and indehiscent, aiding in wind dispersal.

Ecologically, Achillea distans plays a significant role in its native habitats by providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. It is also used in traditional herbal medicine for its purported anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. One interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to withstand harsh alpine conditions, including cold temperatures and strong winds, which is facilitated by its deep root system and the ability to grow in nutrient-poor soils. This resilience allows it to colonize challenging environments where few other plants can thrive.
