Achillea millefolium var. californica
Achillea millefolium var.
Also known as: California Yarrow
Achillea millefolium var. californica, commonly known as California Yarrow, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, particularly found in California and parts of Oregon. This variety typically grows in a range of habitats, including grasslands, open woodlands, and disturbed areas, often thriving in well-drained soils. The growth habit of California Yarrow can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters (approximately 12 to 35 inches), with a bushy form characterized by its erect stems and a tendency to spread through rhizomes.
The leaves of California Yarrow are finely dissected and feathery, giving them a distinctive appearance that is both aromatic and visually striking. The plant produces clusters of small, flat-topped flower heads, which consist of numerous tiny florets that are usually white to pale yellow in color, blooming from late spring to early fall. The fruit is a small achene, which aids in the plant’s reproduction and dispersal. California Yarrow is known for its ecological role as a nectar source for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, and it contributes to soil stabilization and erosion control in its native habitats.
In addition to its ecological significance, California Yarrow has a long history of use in traditional medicine by Indigenous peoples, who utilized its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. The plant’s ability to thrive in various conditions and its resilience to drought make it an excellent candidate for xeriscaping and low-water gardens. Furthermore, California Yarrow exhibits adaptations such as a deep root system, which allows it to access moisture and nutrients in arid environments, enhancing its survival in the diverse climates of its native range.
