Achillea millefolium var. litoralis
Achillea millefolium var.
Also known as: Coast Yarrow
Achillea millefolium var. litoralis, commonly known as Coast Yarrow, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the coastal regions of western North America, particularly along the Pacific coast from southern Alaska to California. This variety typically thrives in sandy or rocky soils and is often found in disturbed areas, coastal meadows, and grasslands. Coast Yarrow exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters, forming a clumping or spreading habit with a somewhat upright posture.
The leaves of Coast Yarrow are deeply dissected, resembling fern fronds, and are arranged alternately along the stems. The foliage is often aromatic when crushed, contributing to its distinctive scent. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, producing flat-topped clusters of small, composite flowers that are usually white to pale yellow. These flower heads attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, playing a vital role in local ecosystems. The fruit of Coast Yarrow is a small achene, which aids in its dispersal by wind and water.
Coast Yarrow has several ecological roles and human uses. It is valued for its ability to stabilize soil in coastal environments, preventing erosion and promoting biodiversity. Historically, Indigenous peoples utilized the plant for medicinal purposes, including treating wounds and digestive issues, and it continues to be recognized in herbal medicine today. Additionally, Coast Yarrow exhibits adaptations to its coastal habitat, such as salt tolerance and the ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, making it a resilient species in challenging environments.
Sow seeds in spring or fall. Space plants 12-18 inches apart.
