Achillea millefolium var.
Also known as: Western Yarrow
Achillea millefolium var. occidentalis, commonly known as Western Yarrow, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to western North America, particularly found in regions ranging from British Columbia to California and extending eastward to the Great Plains. This variety typically grows in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, open forests, and disturbed areas, often thriving in well-drained soils and full sun. The growth habit of Western Yarrow can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters (approximately 12 to 36 inches) and exhibits a clumping form, with multiple stems arising from a central crown.
The leaves of Western Yarrow are deeply dissected and feathery, giving them a distinctive fern-like appearance. They are arranged alternately along the stem and can be up to 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) long. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early fall, producing flat-topped clusters of small, white to pale yellow flowers that attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. The fruit is a small achene, which is dispersed by wind or animals. This species plays a significant ecological role by providing habitat and food for various insects and is often used in restoration projects due to its resilience and adaptability.
In addition to its ecological importance, Western Yarrow has a long history of use in traditional medicine by Indigenous peoples and herbalists, who have utilized its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. The plant is also known for its ability to thrive in a range of environmental conditions, including drought, making it a valuable species for xeriscaping and low-water gardens. Its ability to produce a large quantity of seeds and its vegetative reproduction through rhizomes contribute to its success in colonizing disturbed areas, further enhancing its role in ecosystem stability and recovery.
