Also known as: Flat-top Whiteweed
Ageratum corymbosum, commonly known as Flat-top Whiteweed, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southeastern United States, extending its range into parts of Central America. This species typically grows in moist, disturbed habitats, such as roadsides, fields, and wetlands. The growth habit of Ageratum corymbosum can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters (approximately 12 to 35 inches). The plant exhibits a bushy form with multiple stems arising from a central base, creating a dense appearance.
The leaves of Ageratum corymbosum are ovate to lanceolate, measuring 5 to 15 centimeters long, and are characterized by a serrated margin. The upper surface of the leaves is dark green and often glabrous, while the undersides may be slightly hairy. The flowers are small, clustered in flat-topped corymbs, and are typically white to pale yellow in color, blooming from late spring to early fall. The fruit of Ageratum corymbosum is a small achene, which is equipped with a tuft of fine hairs that facilitate wind dispersal. This species plays a role in its ecosystem by providing nectar for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, and serves as a food source for certain herbivorous insects.
Ageratum corymbosum exhibits adaptations that enable it to thrive in its native habitats. Its ability to grow in disturbed soils allows it to colonize areas where other plants may struggle. Additionally, the plant’s flowering period aligns with the active seasons of many pollinators, ensuring effective reproduction. While not widely utilized in human applications, it may be of interest in ecological restoration projects due to its role in supporting local biodiversity.
