Tall Agoseris

Agoseris elata, commonly known as Tall Agoseris, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to western North America, particularly found in regions such as the Pacific Northwest and the Rocky Mountains. Its range extends from British Columbia in Canada down through the western United States, including states like Washington, Oregon, and California. Tall Agoseris typically grows in open meadows, grasslands, and disturbed sites at elevations ranging from low to moderate, often favoring well-drained soils.

The growth habit of Agoseris elata can reach heights of 30 to 100 centimeters (12 to 39 inches), with a rosette form at the base. The leaves are lanceolate to linear, measuring 10 to 30 centimeters in length, and are characterized by their smooth margins and a somewhat glaucous surface. The flowering stems are erect and bear one to several flower heads, which are composed of bright yellow ray florets surrounding a central disk of tubular florets. Flowering typically occurs from late spring to early summer. The fruit is an achene, which is a small, dry, one-seeded fruit that is dispersed by wind, aided by a tuft of fine hairs.

Ecologically, Tall Agoseris plays a role in providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, contributing to the biodiversity of its habitat. While it is not widely cultivated for human use, it may have potential in native plant landscaping and restoration projects due to its adaptability and attractive flowers.
