False Agoseris

Agoseris glauca var. laciniata, commonly known as False Agoseris, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western regions of North America, particularly found in areas such as the Rocky Mountains and adjacent foothills. This variety typically grows in open meadows, grassy slopes, and disturbed sites, often at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. The growth habit of False Agoseris is characterized by its upright form, reaching a height of 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant features a rosette of basal leaves that are deeply lobed and can measure up to 20 centimeters in length, with a distinctive gray-green color that may appear slightly glaucous.

The flowering period of Agoseris glauca var. laciniata occurs from late spring to early summer, producing bright yellow, dandelion-like flowers that are arranged in solitary heads atop slender, leafless stems. Each flower head can contain numerous ray florets, which are typically 2 to 4 centimeters long, and are surrounded by green bracts. Following the flowering stage, the plant produces achenes, which are small, dry fruits that are dispersed by wind, aiding in its propagation across its native range. The plant’s ecological role includes providing nectar for various pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, which are attracted to its vibrant flowers.
