Agoseris lackschewitzii, commonly known as Mill Creek Agoseris, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the mountainous regions of the western United States, particularly found in areas of Oregon and California. This species typically grows in meadows, open forests, and along roadsides at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,500 meters. The growth habit of Agoseris lackschewitzii is characterized by a rosette of basal leaves that can reach heights of 15 to 45 centimeters. The plant has a slender, erect flowering stem that can rise above the rosette, often reaching up to 60 centimeters in total height.
The leaves of Mill Creek Agoseris are lanceolate to ovate, with a smooth or slightly wavy margin, and can be up to 30 centimeters long. They are generally green and may exhibit a glaucous sheen. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces a solitary flower head on a long peduncle. The flower heads are composed of numerous yellow ray florets surrounding a central disc of tubular florets, which are also yellow. After flowering, the plant produces achenes, which are small, dry fruits equipped with a pappus that aids in wind dispersal.
Ecologically, Agoseris lackschewitzii plays a role in local ecosystems as a nectar source for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Its presence can contribute to the biodiversity of its habitat. While there are no significant human uses documented for this species, it may be of interest for conservation efforts due to its specific habitat requirements and limited distribution. An interesting adaptation of Mill Creek Agoseris is its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, which is a common characteristic of many alpine and subalpine plants, allowing it to occupy ecological niches where other species may struggle to survive.
Plant in well-drained soil. Water moderately and ensure full sun exposure.
