Annual Ragweed

Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. paniculata, commonly known as Annual Ragweed, is a herbaceous annual plant native to North America, particularly prevalent in the eastern and central regions of the United States and Canada. This variety typically grows in disturbed areas, roadsides, fields, and gardens, often thriving in poor soil conditions. The growth habit of Annual Ragweed can reach heights of 30 to 100 centimeters (12 to 39 inches) and has an erect, bushy form. The stems are usually green and may exhibit a slightly hairy texture.

The leaves of Annual Ragweed are deeply lobed and have a distinctive, fern-like appearance, which can measure up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in length. The leaf arrangement is alternate, and the edges are serrated, contributing to its characteristic look. The flowering period occurs from late summer to fall, producing small, greenish-yellow flowers that are borne in dense, elongated clusters known as panicles. These flowers are wind-pollinated and can produce a significant amount of pollen, which is a common allergen for many individuals. The fruit is a small, oval-shaped achene that contains a single seed, which can be dispersed by wind and water, aiding in the plant’s spread.

Ecologically, Annual Ragweed plays a role in various ecosystems as a pioneer species, helping to stabilize soil and provide habitat for certain insects. However, its prolific pollen production can lead to significant human health issues, particularly allergic reactions and asthma exacerbations.
