Also known as: Woolly Pussytoes
Antennaria lanata, commonly known as Woolly Pussytoes, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to North America, particularly found in the western regions of the United States and Canada. Its range extends from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Northwest, thriving in dry, rocky, or sandy soils, often in open meadows, grasslands, and along roadsides. This species typically exhibits a low growth habit, reaching heights of 10 to 30 centimeters, with a compact and mat-forming form that allows it to effectively cover the ground and prevent soil erosion.
The leaves of Antennaria lanata are distinctive, being covered in dense, silvery-white hairs that give them a woolly appearance. These leaves are typically narrow and lanceolate, measuring 2 to 10 centimeters in length, and are arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. The flowering stems arise from the rosette and bear clusters of small, white to pale pink flowers that resemble catkins, blooming from late spring to early summer. The flowers are dioecious, meaning that individual plants are either male or female, and they produce achenes as fruit, which are small, dry, and indehiscent, allowing for wind dispersal.
Woolly Pussytoes play an important ecological role as a pioneer species, often colonizing disturbed areas and contributing to soil stabilization. They provide habitat and food for various pollinators, particularly bees, which are attracted to the flowers. Additionally, the plant has been used in traditional medicine by some Indigenous peoples for its potential anti-inflammatory properties. Antennaria lanata has adapted to its environment through its woolly foliage, which helps reduce water loss and protect against harsh sunlight, making it well-suited for the dry habitats it occupies.
